One trading interface for professionals and newcomers
A regulated European exchange serving two populations at once: professionals who live in the order book, and newcomers who need the platform to explain itself. I led design across every product surface and kept one system coherent for both.
The problem
A regulated European crypto exchange serves two populations that want opposite things from the same screen: professionals who live in the order book and read density as competence, and newcomers who need the platform to explain itself before they’ll trust it with money. Design for one and you alienate the other.
European regulation added a second axis of difficulty — disclosure and verification requirements shaped flows that would, on a less regulated platform, have been a single tap.
The decision
The easy version of this problem gets solved with two modes: a “pro” interface and a “simple” one, built and maintained separately. I didn’t do that. Two modes would have doubled the surface area the team maintained, and doubled the chance the two versions drift out of sync with each other and with the regulatory requirements both had to satisfy.
Instead, density became a user setting inside one interface, one component system, one set of compliance flows — coherent for both audiences because it was never actually two products.
What shipped
I led design across every product surface — web and mobile — evolving the existing design system rather than replacing it, running design reviews, and mentoring the design team through the cycle.
Result
The result was a single coherent system serving both trading-desk professionals and first-time users, inside the disclosure and verification constraints European regulation put on the flow.
